EXCERPT
“Will you promise me something?” I asked, taking hold of his hands in mine. “Don’t hold back on your feelings; don’t hold it all inside and bury it, okay. I worry about you. Yes, you are this larger-than-life alpha male who is career dominant, powerful, and rich, who can snap his fingers and get shit done in the blink of an eye. And you most definitely are used to living the single life, which means not having to answer to anyone else or explain your actions, but please remember, I’m a tough cookie. I can handle a lot, you know this,” I said, nodding my head, prompting him to agree with me.
Cameron rubbed his thumbs across the tops of my hands. “I recognize I can’t expect you to tell me everything if I don’t do the same; however, there are going to be topics of conversations that I will keep from you. Just know I’m not doing it with any malicious intent in mind, rather it will stem from me being a man, a man who will do anything to protect his woman from any unnecessary worry, hurt, or pain.”
“Cameron, please.”
“I won’t bend on this,” he said sternly. “Trust me to take care of you. After everything you’ve been through, I won’t apologize for being fiercely protective over you.”
“Don’t you understand if you—”
“No, Jenna, you’re my everything, and I will go to the ends of the earth to protect you and make your dreams come true. So, can we agree to disagree on this topic?”
“Only under one condition. Should you change your mind, you come to me and give it to me straight. Don’t ever sugarcoat shit for me, promise.”
He dipped his head and closed his eyes briefly as if to give me a silent promise. I knew it was the best I was going to get under the current circumstances, and the last thing I wanted to do was start an argument.
Cameron gave me a little tug causing my upper body to lean into his. I placed a hand over his heart and lifted my chin. There was so much raw emotion swirling behind those beautiful honey-brown eyes of his, that the morning sun pouring in from the floor-to-ceiling windows couldn’t disguise the gravity of the storm we were weathering.
Mutually, we were hurting, both battling with anguish from our pasts resurfacing, and yet there we sat together, communicating openly and honestly. We were united not only by love but also in the sharing of one another’s sorrow and concerns. Both sympathetic to the other, each wanting to ease the ache the other was feeling and help shoulder the burden. Together we were a force, and while there had been a shift in our relationship, it was a detour that, in the end, would only strengthen us because of it.
With his hand resting under my ear, his fingertips splayed up into my hairline, and his thumb brushed slowly over my cheek. Our lips parted, our breaths mingled, and our mouths teased each other with a kiss that was sweet, slow, and tender. Neither of us was in a rush to take it to the next level. That wasn’t what the moment was about—it was about reaffirming our connection. It was a kiss that caused my heart to flutter and brought a sense of peace to my soul and served as a reminder, a pledge of sorts, that we’d be okay. Our love was real, and I wasn’t about to let any obstacles stand in the way of our happiness and long-term goals.
